About this course

Learn to inspect wire rope, chain, web, and round slings, identify damage, and recognize when unsafe rigging must be removed from service. When in doubt, take it out.

Daily Wire Rope and Sling Inspection is a self-paced online workplace safety course designed to help workers identify unsafe rigging before a lift begins. It covers pre-use inspections of alloy steel chain, wire rope, web, and round slings, with a focus on recognizing damage, checking identification tags, and determining when equipment must be removed from service.

Participants explore inspection techniques for each sling type, including chain links, wire rope, synthetic fibres, sling fittings, and hooks. The course reviews rejection criteria and the effects of wear, shock loading, overload, heat, sunlight, and other environmental exposure.

The course also provides an overview of the Canadian regulatory framework, including federal regulations and provincial guidelines. Participants learn about inspection types and frequency, documentation, tagging out unsafe equipment, and considerations for repair and proof testing.

A final multiple-choice exam assesses understanding of inspection practices, rejection criteria, and safe rigging procedures. Throughout the course, one principle remains central: “When in doubt, take it out.”

Course duration: Approximately 55 minutes.

Frequently asked questions

How often must chain and wire rope slings be inspected?

Before each use, on every shift — not just annually or after a visible incident.

What should I do if a sling's ID tag is missing or unreadable?

Remove it from service immediately until it can be identified and certified.

What standard governs sling inspection and rejection criteria in Canada?

ASME B30.9 (Slings), which is referenced by OHS regulations across Canadian jurisdictions.

When must a full, recorded inspection by a competent person be done (beyond the daily check)?

At least once a year, in addition to the mandatory pre-use inspection on every shift.

What's the first thing I do if a sling fails any inspection criterion?

Stop. Do not use it. Tag it out of service immediately.
