Safety Training for Calgary Employers

Safety training for Calgary employers

This page is for the person who has to produce the training records, not for someone taking a single course. If you are a safety coordinator, site supervisor or owner in Calgary trying to work out which tickets your crew actually needs and how to keep them current, start here.

The tickets Calgary crews are most often asked for

  • WHMIS β€” the broadest requirement of the lot. Nearly any workplace with controlled products needs it, and it is usually the first gap found in a file review.
  • Fall protection β€” required before anyone uses a fall protection system, under Part 9 of Alberta's OHS Code. Non-negotiable for anyone working at height.
  • Forklift β€” for yards, warehouses and material handling on site.
  • Aerial lift, scissor lift and telehandler β€” commonly asked for together on commercial builds.
  • Equipment operator tickets β€” excavator, skid steer, loader and similar, one per machine.

Two records, not one

The most common problem we see in Calgary training files is a folder full of course certificates and nothing recording the practical side. Alberta's legislation asks the employer to ensure a worker is competent, and for equipment that means both the training and an assessment on the machine. Online training supplies the first properly and documents it; the second happens on your site, and it has to be written down. We provide supervisor checklists for exactly that reason.

Keeping tickets current

Certificates carry dates, and dates run out. Most Calgary prime contractors work to a three-year cycle for equipment re-evaluation, which matches what CSA B335 recommends for lift trucks, and many write their own refresher intervals into pre-qualification. If you are managing a crew of any size, the practical problem is not buying the training β€” it is knowing whose certificate expires next month.

Common questions from Calgary employers

We are pre-qualifying with a general contractor and need records quickly. Courses are self-paced and certificates are issued on completion, so a crew can generally be brought current within days rather than weeks.

Can we buy for a team rather than one at a time? Yes β€” team purchasing with volume pricing is available, and seats can be assigned to people as you hire them.

Do you deliver in person in Calgary? The courses on this site are online. In-person practical evaluation is normally carried out by the employer, and we supply the checklist so it is recorded properly.

Which do we need first? If you are starting from nothing, WHMIS covers the most people, then fall protection for anyone working at height, then the machine-specific tickets for whoever operates equipment.
